So I’m a little late in posting this here, but this last August the first female enlisted sailor earned her submarine qualification, joining over 40 female officers who have already qualified. You can read the full article HERE.
On a personal note, I’m very glad to see this happening. My first paying history gig was on-board a diesel submarine and having female *staff* was contentious to a lot of the older sailors who worked and volunteered there – many of them quit in protest. The article states that the Navy’s goal is to have 20 percent of the Ohio class’ enlisted personnel be female; I would love to see either the blue or gold crew be 100%.
